I have mounted several (10 or so) big game heads and am satisfied with my work. A friend had a fawn die and he offered it to me to mount. I have never mounted a life size animal. I have all the other processes down, I just need to know what to do with the hooves. Artificial or use the deer's own hooves? My guess is the deer's hooves, but how do you preserve them?

All you need to do is skin it to the last knuckel. There's no need for you to do any things else to them than tanning the skin.
