How much time do I have?

Submitted by Tick tock goes the clock on 7/9/01. ( ) 130.13.87.119

I have a hide that has been tanned and put in the freezer. It stayed there for about 2 months untill I recently pulled it out to rehydrate and mount the deer. Well I think I have jumped the gun and I want to do some more research before I mount it. It has been in my fridge fairly wet from rehydrating for 2 days now. How long can I keep it in the fridge like this without damage? Or should I, can I just refreeze for a while. I think I will be ready in a week or so. Thanks for the help, you guys are a real help.

I'm not an expert on tanning, but I generally freeze a cape if it is going to be more than two-three days before I can mount it. Keep in mind that refrigerating doesn't kill bacteria or mold, it just slows them down. Have refrigerated tanned capes for a two to three day period many times with no ill effects. On the same note... I have frozen many capes after tanning with no ill effects. I'll generally work up and tan several capes at a time and then freeze for mounting the following week. I'm not sure as to how the various TYPES of tans are affected by refrigerating or freezing. I feel that a cape "receives" a tan better if refrigerated overnight in a plastic bag after tanning anyway. If he's available, Bruce would probably have something more substantial on this subject. Good luck. ...RickJ

If the cape was tanned properly I dont see why you would need to freeze at all.Just store in a dry place until ready to mount, rehydrate and mount. Now if it was a raw cape that would be a whole different story.Good luck.
