CJ it depends on what type of learner you are.. Some people are better leaners than others so that type of person could do good with home courses (thats how i learned)..look on this page at a post titled NEW TO TAXIDERMY it was posted on 6/26/01 there are some other opinoins..Like i said everyone is different in the way that they learn and you will see in these forums different in the way they mount..good luck...

Thanks rod...

while videos and books have their place there is one thing they do not offer... constructive criticism. I would, even money is not a factor, go to a good school or take some workshops. Heck Ii still go to workshops today (never too old to learn). If you can not do that, then do the video/book thing but be sure to join your state org and compete! This way you can get your work critiqued and start off on the right foot. You need other folks who know what to look for to critique your work. Otherwise, you stand the chance of developing bad habits and repeating the same mistakes over and over. Any money/time you spend investing in yourself is always worth the price!

I think that the first thing that I am doing tomarrow is joining my state association. I am probably going to keep doing home study, until, I can find someone local that would be willing to teach me. Thanks again.

CJ, I am glad to hear that you are going to join your state org. Where are you from? Another good org is the NTA (you might have to join it when you join your state org). If at all possible go to a world show or a national show. The friendships and experience you will gain there is worth the costs. Remember anyone can DO taxidermy, few have mastered the ART side of it. Learn all you can, compete, compete and compete, hone your skills and then charge what your abilities and experience will allow. Good Luck to you and if you ever get the chance come on out to our show (Montana).

Hey C. J. I am glad you are learning well all of the above is good informatin. The Rinehart videos are easy to follow I find that is a good thing you are doing, joining the NTA you can learn alot from people you will meet. You will also learn alot yourself you will learn easier ways to do things as you progress in your work always be willing to try something new. If there is anything I can help you with let me know I get on the website as often as I can it's mostly at night. I am a long way from you to show you anything but I will do the best I can good luck from L.O.T.

Check out our website www.northwoodtaxidermy.com
Taxidermy can be frustrating if you do not have someone to tell you about the mistake you have made and you already made it. You need a patient Master Taxidermist to get you started then the videos will make sens. Some are totally obsolete also. Our school offers a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and teach many things other schools do not. Stay away from dry preservative obsolete for old timers or someone that does not command top dollar for their work or put much effort into it. Tammy Zimmerman
