Hobby Kit...What else do I need?

Submitted by Ron on 7/16/01. ( rhluna@hotmail.com ) 66.61.96.223

I've always wanted to learn the art of taxidermy. Two years ago I bought the videos from McKenzie, but then life fell apart for awhile and I couldn't pursue it. Now things are leveling out and I would like to give this a try. I was looking at the hobby kit for WT mounts from WASCO. I know I would need a form, but what about tools, etc.? Is there a particular manual that would best go with this hobby set for a first timer?

Also, what would you recommend as a minimum amount of space in order to be able to work comfortably as a hobby...meaning up to maybe 10-20 mounts a year?

Breakthrough has manualls that can help you out. Just go the the WASCO site and you can find them. Not much is needed for a hobbist but get the best you can afford.

What about space?

Any responses on the amount of space I would need to pursue this as a hobby?

(lol) It depends on a lot of things. Are you going to be doing your own tanning? If so, you'll need a lot more room to set up your various containers for pickle, tan, etc. A seperate area for salting is especially nice, since salt has a tendency to migrate to other areas. Running water is especially handy. A seperate area to do your finish work with good lighting is good. If you will be doing a lot of airbrushing, good ventilation is a must. Take all these things into consideration and look at what you have available. I've worked in our basement, on the kitchen table...you can soak a deer hide in one of those 5 gallon buckets if you have to...I have a homemade fleshing wheel that I set up, drape off with plastic and take down when I'm done with a current project (my husband is very possessive of his work bench (lol) it just depends on how committed and busy you intend to be. Also, check out the search button to your left...type in new shop and you'll get a lot more ideas. Good Luck!
