I am going to try to mount my first shoulder mount this fall and need some info on where to learn how to tan a
deer hide. Is this method better than the dry preservitive. what are the advantages of tanning? Which kit would
you recommend I start with? Thanks.......

Since this is posted in the beginners forum I'll assume you're new to the site. Your question is a very basic one. There's certainly nothing wrong with that, we all had to learn somewhere. This subject has been discussed in great detail in the past. You can read those previous exchanges in the archives. Go to any category then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. You'll find links to that category's archives there. I'd suggest starting in the "tanning" category then the "beginners" or "deer" categories. Good luck.

...use the search button; While I find the archives wonderful reading and have picked up a lot of knowledge; I find using the search to be a quicker method of finding something specific. The search is in the ovals to your left. click and then type in your title...maybe "learning to tan" or "first deer" or something like that. Good Luck

commercial tan

Best move I ever made was to stop messing with preservatives, or tanning stuff and have my capes commercially tanned. They do a lot of work for around $25, you get a quality product that will last forever, and you won't be near as aggrivated fleshing out the cape. Also, have it wet tanned. Much nicer to mount than dry and rehydrated. My opinion only!

Jim, get a kit.

You can buy a head mounting kit which contains all of the basic materials that you need, including tanning materials. I know that Van Dykes has them (and they are not expensive) and I assume that other suppliers would as well. Comes with directions and everything you should need.

I have been doing it for years and it seems to me that perservative it does just as good as tanning does. It all boils down to how people take care of the mount. I have seen a mount that was 20 years old and they are in just as good of shape as any. I have had some that has been tanned and 10 years they start falling apart.
