I am preparing to give it a go at a red fox. the fox is whole frozen and still in the freezer but would like the pros and cons and the best method for preparing this fox for a mount. any help will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Lutan if you are familar with the process

Many a fox has been mounted with DP, but tanning is probably a better way to go if you are comfortable with the process. I have done both, and prefer tanning for ease of handling. The DP requires much more tweaking and pinning at least it has in my experience. I don't use either Lutan or DP at present.

the red fox is a critter that has a tendency to get hair slip!
thawing it can be a problem and i have heard and have taken the advise to thaw the fox in a pickle solution. i also salt the skin as i'm skinning,it's kinda messy but i feel safer doing it.also, keep that ph down to 1.5 to 2. i've kept fox in the pickle for days with no problem as long as i kept the ph at the proper level.keep checkin it so it doesn't creep up on yuh! oh, i forgot, after skinning i salt twice and then dry the skin hard. now that advise came from Bruce Rittel who forgot more about tanning than i'll ever know. drying the skin hard helps to set the fur! hokey dokey, ivan, you're on your own. good luck to yuh!

i gotta get muh flack jacket and helmet on now! bye

hey ivan, i use lutan f to tan and oxalic acid in my pickle solution!the instructions come with the chemicals or most catalogs will have them. good luck again!
p.s. you can also use the search button and type in tanning with lutan f or whatever u choose to use and you'll get a wealth of info on the subject.

Ivan, listen carefully to Don's advice. Foxes are especially tricky and if you follow them exactly, you stand a much better chance of not having problems.

Oh, and Don, You'd better be careful. Giving advice like that could make you and icon, too. LOL
