Sealing base for easy cleaning

Submitted by Kenny Sorrells on 7/23/01. ( ) 152.163.189.131

I have completed my first turkey in the full strut pose. For the habitat, I have added morels, ferns and grass (all artificial). My questioin is this, how do I seal the dirt on the base so the entire mount can be cleaned or dusted without too much disturbance to the base? I have used peat moss for the dirt. So far, I have treated it with bug spray and heat. I have tried a whole can of polyuerathane spray, but the peat will still shift. If anyone can help me on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Kenny

Not without seeing it....

You are sending a liquid to a natural sponge. Without seeing how you made "dirt" out of peat moss, I have no clue. You are going to have to put away the pea shooters and bring out the heavy artillery. You might test a small area with spray laundry starch followed with a meavy application of Krylon matte. You will be forever filling the pores in that moss with the spray lacquers. You will need to fill the surface first. The spray starch should do it, if that doesn't work, you are going to have to invest in some Thompsons sealer or a comparable product.

Elmers and water

Hello Kenny,
Mix 1 part Elmer's Glue to 2 parts warm water into a spritzer bottle, such as they use to mist plants and flowers. Shake it up to mix it well.Spray it over your base (Habitat). When it dries, the glue will keep everything together in place, and it will dry clear.
Try it. It works great!
