old school vs new?

I was given a "recipe" by my Grandfather on how to achieve a hairless hide. The process includes hardwood ashes, alum and other ingrediants. My project is a hairless moose hide,is their a better way? Nothing comes easy but the old way does work. Thanks

DeHairing

Hello Bryan,
DeHairng can be a simple process while only using 3 products to achieve it (Not including your pickling and tanning supplies.)
Use Calcium Hydroxide for your "Liming" process which will remove the hair.
Ammonium Sulfate for the Deliming process which kills off or stops the Lime process.
Oropon for the Bating process, which will replace the enzymes that the lime removed, giving you better tanning results.
Once the dehairing process has been completed, rinse, pickle, flesh, neutrilise, rinse and then tann out. Lutan-F would be an excelent choice of tannin for the job,as would others.
Give them a try. I'm sure that you'll be happy with the results!

Have a great day to all,
