In this industry for taxidermy purposes we use the same tans as any tannery uses. The only differences are they are better equiped with their vats, tumblers, fleshing machines than most home do it yourselfers.
Now as for quality that can vary. This depends on what kind of equipment you have. It depends on what your trying to achieve here.
If your looking to do rugs, I would send them out and let the tannery do them. They are better equip than you. A tannery has tumblers that help break down the fibers so that you get a soft tan. I'm not saying it can't be done at home but the process is much harder to do by hand.
If your just doing hides for mounting you need to be able to shave the hide down. There are many different ways of doing this. You can use a knife to the best quality shaving machine. But the main thing is how much are you willing to spend as for time and money. It all up to you and how much time you want to put in to get a quality hide.
Remember a tannery is there for you. Their the ones who are here to help a busy to a not so busy taxidermist with their hides. You can do the same as one but it takes time. And yes I do tan all my hides. The only hides the tannery gets are my rugs. Their better equiped to do this than me.
