Do I have a chance?

Submitted by Vicki on 8/20/01. ( mysticdezign@worldlogon.com ) 204.167.248.30

Hi. I was married to a Taxidermist and I loved to watch him work and help all I could. My question is, would I be able to get started in Taxidermy without going to a school. I need some extra income for me and my children and I would love for it to come from Taxidermy. My ex got out of it totally, he had been doing it for 25 years and he left behind all his books he had aquired over the years so I have some very good reference tools... Any replies will be appreciated... Thanks, Vicki

my best advice would be to attend your state conventions and do all the seminars you can. Other than that get in alot of practice and make sure you are squared away with your state and federal licenses. Good luck!

Why not !

I think that it is great that you want to begin doing Taxidermy.I would recommend getting some video how to tapes of Taxidermy.[a supply company] has alot to choose from and so does WASCO.It will give you a good place to start. You will learn more as you begin mounting on your own.I wish you all the luck in the world.

Vickie, I have wanted to do taxidermy for a long time, about 20 years. I finally got the nerve to try it and I can"t for the life of me, figure out why I waited so long. I started out with $80.00 and a good friend that had a deer that he wanted mounted. I agreed to do it for the experience, and from there, just three short years ago, I am going to advertise for the first time in our local paper during opening week here in Indiana. Since starting I have found a lot of support from both friends that hunt and the poeple on this site that answere my guestions. Go for it, and if you have any questions, This is the next best thing to knowing a taxidermist yourself. Take care and have fun, Bob

Why have you waited?

I agree with Bob, get involved with your state association, fast track maybe by working with another taxidermist. Good Luck.

If you have all the tools and you have books plus you have seen the way it's done besides having your hands in it, I would most definitely go for it. Plus if you have a good question or not sure about something you have a ton of help right here at the net.

Good luck, have fun and take your time. You'll do just great!

My best advice for you, is to take your time and practice. Before you would go out and sell the work. Extra money will fall short if work is not of quality. You need to mount everything as if it were your own to display. With pride, love and commitment!

The best to you......

Just one more thing........

practice

is great but don't forget to study anything you can get ahold of to help you learn good business techniques or you won't be making money. you'll just have an extra hobbie. you did say that you wanted to suppliment your income.

You shouldn't even have to think about it!

You've seen it, and been there. You probably know the answer in your heart now. And you also know you CAN. It's just nice to get encouragement from others. SO DO IT!

I did it, So can you

This response submitted by c. harley on 8/26/01. ( taxidlady@hotmail.com ) 206.74.126.74

Yes, you can, I had to learn all by myself also. It's really confusing at first, learn through video and Breakthrough books. I've been at it 6 years now and I have more customers than I have time for. Yes and join your local Association, the old pros have a wealth of knowledge, free for the asking.

ANYONE CAN

You can do anything that you set your mind to, and you alreasy have some basic knowledge on it. So read all your books and give it a try and see what happens. It has been my experience that women make great taxidermist because they pay alot of attetion to details.
GOOD LUCK
