I checked the archives, and some information comes close to my question, but does not nail it on the head.
I am in north Florida and am interested in starting a few simple beginner taxidermy pieces - solely as a hobby. Deer feet, maybe a pheasant and squirrel, and if I really like it and have an aptitude for it, I'd like to try a whitetail shoulder mount. I have done a lot of reading and and feel comfortable enough with the techniqes and materials to give it a shot (WASCO will probably be hearing from me!)
But, as a hobbyist, do I need any State or Federal permits, for my location? Also, how can a person who doesn't hunt or trap legally obtain specimens to mount? I love wildlife and being out in wild natural areas but have never learned to hunt, and so will not be taking my own specimens any time soon. And if frozen specimens can be legally purchased, any tips on where?
If anyone has any information, or could even point me in the right direction as to who I should contact, I would sure appreciate the advice.
Note: I have an inquiry pending with FLA's taxidermy assoc. Have not heard anything so far, and so thought I would ask here too. Thanks to any who have any information to share on this.

that part of my question above sounds pretty silly, considering the existence of things like ebay, and the For Sale category on this very forum. I can see there are lots of skins and stuff for sale. I am more intersted in frozen, so I can learn to skin the critters myself, and learn to tan, when I get to that point.
I guess my main question on the issue is: what are the methods by which I can legally obtain frozen specimens in Florida if I do not legally hunt and take my own?
Can I legally purchase? Can someone give them to me? Can I even do this?
Any input or advice appreciated. Thanks.
every state is different so give them a call.

As far as I know you can leagally purchase just about anything without a permit except migratory birds and federally protected species. I know that you can buy frozen but off hand I don't know who. I buy mine all tanned from a furrior in Idaho. Do take the prvious advise and contact you local Fish and Wildlife Service.
Hunting season is right around the corner. I am in the same boat as you. I seldom get to hunt so if I don't get a deer this year, surely someone I know will. There are also probably lots of people who will sell you the feet or head of a doe for a few dollars. Maybe put an add in the paper or go to a hunting store.
Annie,
I usually have a frozen squirrel or two in my freezer, as squirrels are what I like to work with. I would be glad to send you a couple to work on. If you are interested e-mail me. I will in the mean time, check with the DNR here in IL to see what if any permit or license may be needed, so as not to get either one of us into any trouble. You should do the same at your end, then again if you are interested in giving squirrels a try, shoot me a message.
