Fleshing?

What is the proper way to flesh a light skin?

I am a beginner, and obviously don't have a fleshing machine. Every time I flesh my skins, it takes FOREVER. I use a small knife and a little triangular-shaped fleshing tool. It usually takes me 2-3 hours to flesh a skin! Ah, my hand hurts sooo bad! I think I must be doing something wrong!

Amy, Idid the same thing when I first got started. It does take a long time to flesh by hand. As you go along you will become faster but nothing can beat a fleshing machine. Hang in there.Good Luck

If you just doing light skins all you need is a good wire wheel attached to a drill. This will take the membrane off and your hands won't hurt as much.

Amy,
If you have to live with that procedure, make sure you have a good fleshing beam. I recommend a split 6 or 8 inch PVC pipe. A 6 foot piece will cost about $30, but you can make two from it and maybe split the cost with someone esle in a similar fix. Then invest in one of the cheap double handle draw knives. Some suppliers sell the cheap ones for about $15. It'll sure save your hands and save you some time.

Hi Amy, If you can't afford a fleshing machine at this time, try a Ulu knife for your fleshing. They are easy on your hands and you can work very fast with them.

don't discard a good machine so fast.

Hi Amy,

I can understand you , fleshing machines are reletively expensive. On the other hand, you might discourage yourself and never make it to the profitable stage with less expensive hand tools.

Did you know you could own a Quebec Lite for less than $550.00 deliverd to your shop. You will get a video that will show you step by step on how to use it. Your never stuck with a Quebec. Plus it's made to last a life time.
