Michaeal you can make a living at taxidermy and you can make a good
living if you are very good at it. However it doesn't happen overnight.
You need to get into a shop or build a good sized shop so you can have a
showroom. People like to see ahead the type of work you do. Don't be
scared off by the cheap prices. set your prices that YOU can live with
and the work will come, but you really do need a showroom and probably a
job until you are sure the clients are going to be there, and get repeat clients.
You will know when you are at that stage. Also hire an accountant. Save
all your order blanks, log your hours you spend on the mounts. Run your electricty
on a seperate meter to the shop + heat and water if its metered.
Get your phone listed in your business name also.
Good Luck

Michael,
Go to the <<<Search icon and you can find volumes about taxidermy and if you can make "a living". But as has been said a thousand times there, if you like fishing and hunting, forget them. If you like 8 hour days, 9-5, five days a week, forget it. And if you like to take paid vacations, paid medical coverage, and a company car, you'd better plan on a long haul to get there. Don't give up your day job.
Man you can make a good living at this if your good George is right if you dont mind working long hours if you do no good taxidermy dont wait you do it for the custermer or they will go else where i work til midnight during hunting season and back at it at day light again your choice good luck listen to George he HAS
With Taxidermy. YES. Can you make a living? Many have, and are still trying. It takes countless hours and devotion, if you can not afford either one, don't do it! The number one initiative is what you are willing to give. It all starts by the most part of our love of the sport. Then you find yourself engulfed...with others trophies.
Pride of your work, and THE MOST important is pleasing yourself and the customer with quality. Never should one let any mount go without a complete back up of ones work. Long days and long nights is what you have to look forward too. When those hides come in...many hours of skinning,is just the first step. Having the ability to mount a variety is very essential also. Word of mouth IS the best advertisement, all from what you the Taxidermist has achieved over time. What is the best way to learn? Experience!
There are many methods out there, everyone has their own preference. Take your time and learn...and mostly mount everything as YOU would want on your wall! There you will have pride as with your customers! Then you can build a business! Keep honesty no matter what...! Don't allow anyone to beat you down, have a dream and run with it...or at least try.
Good Luck
