I do both. I try to order eyes, earliners, glues, tans, acids, tanning oils, mache, clay, all ahead of time. Because after Nov. 15, when you will need these products, some supplies will be out and you will get hung-up....waiting for than one product on Back Order!
ALSO, this is how I size my raw deer capes initially: I have three or four deer manikins in stock and close to the deer sizes in my area--say 18, 19, 20, 21 inches at atlas, all swelled. These manikan styles my clients like and are the ones inside my studio samples. I can eye ball a lot of capes this way. Takes the guess work out of full rut, pre rut capes when I will place my orders in Dec.
We should ask WASCO for a Business Catagory on this forum. I for one would learn alot, I am certain. For example my first question would be how does a country boy(in rural area) get business from city boys (hunters).
can't forget half of the population, right?
If you want to be LEGAL, you only order what you use and that way you don't have to claim INVENTORY on your taxes. Taxidermy is considered a service industry. Nothing really belongs to US and we only buy what we need to satisfy a customers demands. I measure my deer as they come in the door and after 40 something years, I don't get a finite as I probably should. I do keep consumable supplies on hand and there is always the extra duck or fish form or the form you got in and the customer changed his (or her) mind, but I keep stored forms to a minimum. Old forms tend to get OLD and outdated anyway. I have yet to need any supply at any time of the year and found a supplier "out". I usually have a month lead time on my orders anyway and that will take care of most any of the rare backorders.
