Tanning deer hides for clothing

Submitted by Peggy Schaefer on 10/29/01. ( ) 168.191.154.251

I have enjoyed reading many of the questions and answers to this list. Our family of 6 all hunt and my sons want me to use the hides to make various pieces of clothing for them. I have called several taxidermy businesses in the area and they want $100 to $125 to tan a South Texas deer hide. Needless to say, the price is too great for what I'm trying to do. Can anyone recommend a more reasonable way to get good quality hides for clothing? If it's not feasible to have it done, what steps would I need to take to do this on my own?

Thanks,
Peggy

learn to brain tan like the Lakota Sioux used to do it. Produces a very strong, felt like leather that won't tear. Smoke it for that rich, buckskin tone and it's water repellant as well.

Call 1-800-TAN-HIDE. That WB Place in Wisconsin and they specialize in clothing quality tanning of hides. That means that the hide is tanned and split (split in this case means shaved to an equal thickness so that there are no hard or rough spots in the cape. Quil Ceda Tanning in Marysville, WA also garment tans, but they don't split the capes. Again, most charge less than $30 per hide Both places can and will dye the leather to whatever color your prefer from buckskin to black and red.

Contact Quil Ceda, you will find that it will be cheaper just to buy the hides from their stock that it will be to ship the raw salted skins to them for tanning. Unless you have a sentimental attachment to the hides from your own deer.
