I'm thinking on building a tumbler out of an old dryer minus the heating element. Or would I truly be better off buying a real one for $700? If it really would be better in the long run, I'll spend the money.....I'd like to hear pro's and con's on this of all levels!
Thanks!

The dryer sounds like a good idea cheap, but it ends up being a cheap bad idea. The sawdust gets all over everything as no seal can work in such a jury rig and plugging the holes in the tub can take you a day or so IF they hold up. I think the professional tumblers are overpriced until I compare how long it would take me to build one and find the gearbox and motor required. It's just easier to pay the piper.
LMN, look in the newest Breakthrough Magazine for an article on the tumbler or email me and I will send you pics of mine. It took me about 5 hours and very little money to build a nice 55 gallon tumbler that works great. The dryer is messy and spins too fast. Hope this helps.
is a nice idea but if you are like me and trying to get out work you just do not have the time.
The one from VanDyke's on page 241is the one i use.Works very well and is 400.00 not 700.00.
I would recommend this one over building your own.
The only thing you should add to it is a tray to catch what spills under.
WHEN I STARTED OFF I GOT A OLD CLOTHES DRYER WITH THE HEATING ELEMENT OUT. I CAULKED ALL THE HOLES BUT IT STILL MAKES A BIG MESS. THE SAWDUST CONTINUED TO PILE UP UNDER THE DRYER AND EVENTUALLY BURNED UP. I HAVE BEEN VERY PLEASED WITH THE TUMBLER I PURCHASED.
