How do I preserve my Deer skull with hair

Submitted by NikonRules@aol.com on 11/18/01. ( NikonRules@aol.com ) 152.163.188.67

I just got a 6 point buck and have the rack with the hair still on it. What I would like to do is keep the hair on the skull but I would like it to dry out fast. Two years ago I just packed one in a bag with a couple of pounds of salt and after a few months it dried out. I would really like to do something QUICKER.

Please post your suggestions to me as well as email them to me and thanks!

Put it in the oven

Just put it in the oven on the lowest heat setting for 2to 4 days. They come out just BEEUUTTEEFUL. I shouldn't be telling you this. Because they turn out so good, you will never need to have us high priced taxidermists do one for you again. If you are interrested. I can also tell you how to mummify a fish too!

Could you also dry out hoofs the same way to make a gun rack?

But Graflex takes better pictures. Are you in need of some swampland real cheap? I might be able to come up with that too. For half what "Z" intends to pay for gas or electric for 4 or 5 days, a good taxidermist could have done in a few hours. So go right ahead with the hooves. And in six months from now, you'll no doubt be on here asking us what kind of insecticide kills the bugs crawling all over your "mounts".

i cape the top of the face and the head except you don't need ears just the skin at the bottom of ears separate the hide from the skull plate as close to the antlers/horns as you can and flesh as well as you can then rub in dry preservative I cut a 1/4 pice of plywood the shape of the skull plate and screw the skull plate to the wood then on the underside of the wood i pull the hide around and staple it cut off what you don't need attach to the panel and hang on the wall should dry in a few days - hope this helps- james
