I don't want to sound smart but not knowing the laws from where you are at the best way to get practice fish is to go to a local pond, lake, or river and catch a few fish. But make sure those fish are of legal size that you do decide to keep.
If you want to spend a few bucks contact some folks who raise fish. Cecil Baird usually sells some each year and he knows what to look for. I have bought some really great rainbows from a guy who raises them for restaraunts... go figure

Bream, bluegill bass are all available right out side. Try carp and suckers for skinning practice, gar too Trout may be purchased from farms in your area maybe. You really don have to spend big dolars on big fish top practice.
Tom thanks for the referral , but after spending $4000.00 on two new ponds, another several thousand on fish like brook, brown, rainbows, smallmouth, yellow perch, bluegills, largemouth bass and a fish hauling tank, trailer, new well, plumbing, valves and other equipment I probably won't have trophy fish available until the fall of 2003.
It takes a while to grow trophy fish and I lost some up and coming largemouth in the last wicked winter we had. However that shouldn't happen again.
I'll let everyone know when fish are available here and on my web site http://www.ligtel.com/~jjbaird/bairdfish2.htm
In the mean time, if I have any extra fish that I have caught fishing and obviously can't legally sell, I'll post them and only ask for reinbursement for shipping. If I find any other sources I'll pass them on, but I've done that a couple of times and the sources turned out to unreliable.

will sometimes even give you some fish for free. Let me check my freezer and check if I have any that I can give you. Give me an e-mail back to check if I do or not.

thanks for the feed back sounds like a dumb question now that I read some responses. I found a trout pond near my house maybe I will talk to him for some fish. however do you think trout will be to hard to learn on. thanks agian
I think they are one of the easiest to skin. They can be a little tricky to mout since the skin is so thin. They are as good as any to practice on though.

I'm in the same boat as you, jsut starting out, and fortunatly i got a good fishing hole with some big trout. Brown trout seem easier to me because their skin is thicker and their scales don't fall out easily. Most fish farmers here in the south sell trout for $2.50 per lb. And a 1-2 pound fish is a good size to work with.
Good Luck,
Jason
