Slight hair slip

Submitted by Dave A. on 11/27/01. ( d.annable.@sympatico.ca ) 64.231.153.55

I'm doing my first deer head, I have salted and dried the cape.
Rehydrated and now the capes are now in the pickle bath,
Today i noticed the hair on the brisket has started to slip a
little. this is day 2 in the pickle. is it normal to have a
little hair loss around this area. it seems to be only this
one spot that is slipping on both capes.

Thank you
Dave A

Pickle will onlty set the hair.

When the pH is at 2.0 or lower, it will set the hair, any slippage that happens is because of heat or bacteria before the pickle. It could be that these areas are where body fluids pooled during salting.

Ticks

Check and see if that area is loaded with ticks. I have found this to be true on a lot of capes that were infested with them. Usually is only in the brisket area.
