chapped hands

Submitted by dale w on 12/16/01. ( dwarriner@ritzcom.net ) 66.62.72.112

My hands are like 80 grit sandpaper and cracking. Very painful. I know some of it is the winter weather, but I know a lot of it comes from having hands in salt and blood in this trade. Anybody got a secret ointment or something I can use to help prevent this? Thanks. And my wife thanks you too.

Gloves

Get youself some nitrile gloves. You can get them pretty reasonable through harborfreight.com . They sell them in boxes of 100 and come in 3 sizes. Your wife will be happy as well. When I am done for the day and provided I dont have any holes in them, I just take them off, they usually turn inside out when you do this , and hang them up to dry. When its time to use them again, just put them on the way they are, you dont have to turn them right side out to wear them. Take care of them hand!, where would you be without them!.

Hi Dale,
Go to the drug store and get some corn huskers lotion. It's been around for years and years but is great stuff.

with bishop more!......utilizing gloves are a must as it protects you from numerous "ailments, bites and problems" and also they protect the hide you are working on from bacteria and ultimately slippage.

Protal

I found out that when rubbing Protal on to tanned hides it really did wonders on my hands. My wife has problems with her hands drying and cracking in the winter time. She tried it a couple of times and found it worked well but she didn't like the smell. The real solution though is to wear gloves.

Neutrogena does well, but have to agree with glove advice

Udder balm from your local farm and home store, used for cows, works good. Heavy duty stuff

Superglue

If you need instant relief from the pain and give those cracks a chance to heal try using superglue to fill the cracks. Just be careful as you can become dependant on the "quick fix" and not protect your skin with items listed above.
