After skinning, salting, washing the WT cape, I use a tanning cream. Do you guys think that applying a dry preservative before mounting would be worthwhile? Would it help any (orhurt) or is it just a waste of supplies.

Also, is the 20 mule team borax you buy at the grocery store the same as the Dry preservative from the taxidermy supply house.
Thanks for any information.
Dan

No, I would'nt use dry preservative for ANY cape as this is NOT a tan at all . You will have to fight this cape to keep it from shrinking on you cause you basically are making ang using rawhide. No, the product you mentioned is not the same as the DP product you buy from the suppliers. When I first started out I purchased DP and I still have 99% of this left today. I was using it on my skull plates to dry them out and realized that it is not even good for that. As far as I am concerned, I plan to be doing this WILDLIFE ART for a long time,God willing, and DO NOT take chances with dry preservatives period. Wait until you get a good wiff of this stuff and you will see what I mean. Take care of yourself! I use only SAFETY products from Rittels. Safety solvent, Safty Acid , EZ 100 etc... I am extremely happy with the results and know that when I get a splash of solution in my face I'm not in BIG trouble. At one time I was using SULFURIC ACID! bad news if your not careful! Sorry for the lechture but wanted you to know what your getting into . Best of luck & health to ya! Brad
