I have a deer cape with a gapping wound in the neck area toward the back about 8 inches directle below the ear but. The hole is almost perfectly round and about 3 and a half inches in diameter. Told the guy I haven't atempted to repair anything of this size. He insists on me trying to salvage it due to a double throat patch. Can it be done? It is about a 17 inch by 21 swell

it can be done. You may loose a little of that 21" swell though. If it's skinned, try and pull it together and see how it matches. I'ts one thing if it pulls together but a completely different story if the hide is missing. Either way it can be done. You will have to cut it to the "football" shape as always. It may not look absolutely perfect put certainly acceptable.
Kenny,
Dan is right, you can cut out the football and pull it together. You have two options, you can cut the football with the grain of the hair and you will lose the 3 inches from the swell. Or, if you cut it across the hair, you just have to pull the cape up the form another 3 inches (if your cape is cut long enough). That's what I would do. Play around with it before you make your cut and even try it on a spare form to see how it lines up.
