LW,
The "V" is an impossible situation unless you are cutting the nape of the neck down to below the ear butts. The "Y" allows the cross hair pattern cut to be confined to the skull cap and the tail of the "Y" to go down the neck along the hair patterns. If you are using the "V" as I described, you're really making it harder on yourself than you need because you are constantly aligning crossed hair patterns.
I started useing the V cut and when you get used to it ,it is a very good method and the only one I use if given the choice. With all due respect George, the hair patterns are the same and the cuts are the same except your eliminating the bottom tail of the Y . I learned this method from Ronnie Gilliard and he developed it because he also hates sewing . The hardest part of this method is the ears because you dont have as much room to work your hands in there but when you figure it out it is fantastic. Honest.
I started using a 'T' cut because it was easier to teach my assistants than a 'Y' cut was. They seemed to have a hard time bring the 2 slants together before making the tail, and I would end up with a real sharp angle at the middle of the 'Y' which would soften up after fleshing and tanning. The 'T' cut seems to eliminate any serious softing of the angles and I'll have three 90 degree angles in which to sew.
I saw this on a Van Dykes video and it seemed to work pretty slick. I have only used the Y, but I might try thr seven. Cit across between the burrs and then angle down to the center of the mane and then straight down the rest of the cut.
I learned to use the T cut from a guy a couple years back. Makes the sew up much nicer because of the 90 degree angles. No more worries on making the V come together for the tail of the Y.
Try it...I bet you'll like it.
Merry Christmas
Dave
What does it spell?
YTV7 - it is actually the form number for a new start up company. The announcement won't be till January 1, but it will feature the first Really Really Really honest Genuine realistic Whitetail form. There will be also the TVY7, and the VTY7 forms, all in increment of 1 mm diference. The typical American Supply company always does thing in inches. What if you have a 7 3/16 inch size - do you buy a 7 1/4 or a 7/1/2 - neither will fit. But by using the measurements in Millimeters you can be assured it will really fit cause it is Really Really Really Honest to size. We have had to Sculpt 2000 different forms with measurements of 125 mm up to 250 mm eye nose measurement for those little North Central Pennsylvania Bucks to those big big Manitoba Bucks. Neck measurements go from about 500 mm up to 1000 mm - roughly equivalent to a 39" whitetail deer. Don't let those big hides knock you. We also have change out parts - i.e. change out heads, change out necks, change out briskets and change out shoulders. Basically we will be the erector set company of Taxidermy. We still haven't chosen a name. But ESCOT would be a good acronym - probably better than the Erectors.
Be sure to look out for our TTV7 forms. They have been given a full endorsement by Bill Yox - even though he doesn't know it yet.
Nice one PA. B, I have the greatest respect for Ronnie, but he can't hate sewing any more than I (Roger Martin says he does, but I doubt him too.), but sewing doesn't bother me HALF as much as screwing with those thin skinned hair patterns over the ear and having "Alfalfa's" sticking up when it dries. I still maintain that the "Y", the "7", and the "T" give the taxidermist a better chance at covering the inequities of his stitching.
yep I said reverse, makes it darn hard to find the seam. Before asking think.
Thats what I love about this site and the people here, they all have thier own way and they are willing to share it. As Mike Boyce says " blessed are the flexible for they will not break ". The newbies understandably think that there are rules to adhere to and really there are so many methods that will work and hopefully many that have'nt been thought of that it is quite exciting really. when we start saying "this is the only way", than we have a problem. I am not at all saying that this is what your saying George so dont think that okay. I will hopefully NEVER be closed minded to anyones ideas or methods and will tuck your advice as well as all the others in my hair covered computer and think about it. Respectfully, Brad
Thats why I DONT use a 7 cut, same as George. Sounds great in theory, but when the antlers and ears are in the way, Im not fishing aound for the points of those seams, nor do I wanna stictch up across the ear butt. Im all for the T cut, actually as a real shallow Y cut, so I see the center AND use the natural hair pattern. Can I say I developed it? Ha ha ha! Stephen, I thought the form company was being delayed 4 months, April, I heard?
That's my choice
