Just watched the salle damhes beginers video and noticed she did not tan the hide just treated it with dry perserve. Is this a good idea to do or should a person tan the hide and if so what is the proper way to send the hide to the tanner does it need to be completly fleshed and then salted to send out there is a local guy that uses a auto tanner any opions on this method would be a great help any general ideas of cost to have the hide tanned would also help hate to be taken for a ride thanks for any help that you folks are willing to share on this subject Later

if sallie dahmes says do it,...DO It!, she knows what shes talking about. trust me
Sallie's video is geared toward "BEGINNERS". DP is the easiest way for any beginner to learn mounting as TANNING could be considered a complete course in itself. As you get more experienced, you'll have to decide which you like better. As for tanning, remove all red meat, open the lips and remove all the meat as well as turn the ears inside out, and shave the meat off the eyebrows(and down into the eyelids) andclean the nose so that only the cartilage and nostril skin remains. Then salt heavily overnight, dump it the next morning and resalt. After it dries, then send it to the tannery OR the guy down the street.
If your going to flesh the cape yourself, you might as well just tan it yourself also, since you've already done 95% of the work.Would recomend one of the paint-on tans, like Liqua-tan or Curatan.I've had good luck with both.Have fun.
i to have that same viedo, but reading here i have seen so much negativity about dp , have my cape being professionally tanned. then i will mount myself,,, that way have less things i can mess up
lol,,, have the other part of my hide liquid tanned and yes im impressed with results, so good luck
I have that same video. I watched it a little less than a year ago and have done three deer and a coyote with DP. They all came out OK, the things I do not like are my fault. Sallie does not go into great detail about DP and how it shrinks. She also doesn't spend much time on the little things such as making sure your wiskers are not matted down. Bottom line is the DP is cheaper than having it commercialy tanned. Just my thoughts.
