tanned deer cape

bought a already(dry) tanned cape.looks to be a professinal job. this is my first deer to mount. my question is do i need to soak this hide in water for so long to be able to get a stretch out of it and to turn the ears back in. the ears are alittle stiff and are going to be hard to turn like they are now. ive been told just to damp it with a sponge but i dont think just damping it is going to get it done. will it hurt to soak this hide?

For each gallon of water use a handfull of salt, soak cape in solution for about an hour. Place in plastic bag and put in refridge overnight. Should be ready to mount after some final thinning...Paul
