Hair ridges

Is there a type of finishing cream that I can use to set the hair of my whitetail? I sometimes use a firm hold hairspray, but this time I am getting ridge lines of hair right in the centre of the chest that the hairspray will not hold smooth. it's almost like the hide is buckled or folded but it's not
I have seen some pictures of deer mounts where the hair looks almost pasted down smooth. My Alberta deer has fairly long hair.
Any help appreciated.

your deer isn't dry, place a piece of light cardboad over the "ridge" pin it in a couple of places and that should make it lay flat. Perhaps you have pressed the hide paste into the shape of a ridge while grooming. Another trick is to mix up some whiting and smooth it over unruly hair let it dry, then brush it out when the mount is done(dry). The whiting wont change the color of the hair. I use it quite a bit on African game seams and on the back of sheep legs.

Good advice above, and you can also use a piece of screen,

pinned over the unruly hair after spritzing with water to set it in place or bring a pot of water to a boil, slow roll and toss in some corn starch, mix into a thick "gravy", almost the consistency of smooth peanut butter, smooth over the hair following the patterns and when dry brush off with a wire brush, leaves a nice, clean sheen and lays the hair right

Ever try...

..DippetyDo? WalMart has their own brand similar. Dries and can be brushed out.

Mouse or gel

99% of the deer I mount are alberta november bucks and I can assure you that the long hair hides imperfections and usualy does not cause them. What may have happened is the hair may have become kinked while it was rolled up. whatever the cause I just rub extra hold mousse or hair gel in(use lots) and this normaly takes care of it. for realy stubborn hair do the same and add some screen(I almost never have too do that). P.S. over all your repairs to the hide you should mousse them immediately after mounting wheather they show or not, this will keep the hair from lifting as the hide dries and produce invisible repairs. of course you will need to comb it all out in the finishing stage.
