How much cape is enough?

Submitted by andy on 1/21/02. ( ) 209.165.173.76

Hi,

Doing my first shoulder mount. Not sure how much cape I need to start with. Do I simply sew up the holes made from the front shoulders, starting as close to the brisket as possible. Or is that too much cape?

Help.

Andy

Holes from front shoulders?

Are you talking about the leg holes? If so spilt them down the brown and white hir line that would be on the back. Keep all the cape and only cut it off once you have it mounted. This will let you have plenty to taxi.

yes, leg holes

Yes,

So I would split down the back of the legs, but do not cut all the way through the chest (like if I was doing a rug cut), right? Will I ever need to sew the holes up before I apply the cape on the form?

Without an email address it's hard to correspond with you. cut around the animal behind the front legs, cut forward and to and then down the front legs about six inches and then around the legs. pull everything forward to the base of the neck cut the neck off, then cape as usual. You will cut down the back from between the antlers to above the shoulders. Sounds like some instructional video's would be worth renting from one of many suppliers, or reading up on a basic taxidermy book if you plan on getting into this business. You can't learn it relying on others and using this forum or you will get very frustrated doing so. email me if you have any other questions about caping. I would suggest after you cape it, freeze it and then educate yourself by the above means before proceeding to mount it. Good luck.
