I just got into taxidermy, just to do my own stuff for a hobby. I tan my own skins, and I understand all of the steps, but I was just wondering why you need to oil a skin before you mount it. I do oil them, but was just wondering why it is needed.

Is one of the main ones. Next to that you will get a better stretch. Plus it softens the hide to make it more workable. This is just a sample I'm sure Bruce or Mark can tell you more specific reasons
