i got a cape from a guy that was shot with buckshot all in the neck. there is around 20-25 holes in the neck and shoulder area but they are small holes. from the hair side of the cape you cant see them at all. it has a nice winter coat. do i need to sew each one of these or will they be alright to just leave alone. hate to do that much sewing and hate to throw this nice cape away either. what would you do? thanks

But I would sew the holes up. You see after the mount dries and the skin shrinks it just may show the holes.

Sewing is just part of the business and we have to learn to live with it. And why would you throw it away? Just beacuse it has some holes in it. Wait this is nothing compared to what you will get in. So in plain words learn to enjoy sewing or don't bother to get into this work. All the work we do needs some kind of sewing and if your lucky and get real good you can hire a person just to sew.

To fix them make sure it doesn't have any brun spots. Check the hair where it came threw. If you don't have any real bad ones just a simple not will work. you don't have to close them up that there perfectly closed with that small of a hole but becareful with the hide paste it will find all those holes and seep out when your gluing your cape down. So just think if I don't close them look at all teh clean you may have with it. It's a catch 22 dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.

Franks right, sewing is 30% of what taxidermy is about

Franks advice is 100% the way I repair it.

Always sew the holes. I have seen people try to repair holes pulling them together and pinning after its mounted. But they always seem to show, either in
the hair pattern of long haired deer. or the open up on short haired deer.

Good luck on sewing.

thanks guys
