Problems with droop whitetail mount

Submitted by J Harshbarger on 3/23/02. ( jharshbarger@yraknet.com ) 216.153.194.172

I was attempting to mount a tanned cape, purchased on ebay, on a sportsman series (WASCO 400 series) droop whitetail mount with a right turn. Previous to rehydrating the cape, I suspected that the cape would need to be really re-stretched to fit the 7 1/4 x 19 form. I stretched and stretched and was able to get the cape to meet behind the ears, but beyond that going toward the shoulder the gap gets increasingly larger. I've put the cape in the freezer and am going to order another form. My question is, could the right turn droop form be causing the strange fit? Should I stick with just a straight upright form in a size smaller neck? There are no measurments for the circumferance at the shoulder, but I am going to need something much smaller than what I have in the 400 series form. Any help would be appreciated.

remeasure the cape

What I would do is remeasure the cape. Take all the measurements, eye to nose, behind the ears and about 2 to 3 inches down on the neck. From those measurements look through your catalog and choose a form that will best fit your cape. You may even want to go with a just slightly smaller form than your measurement. Remember the cape will shrink a bit when it dries and this will prevent your seam from opening up. The pose of the from should not matter is it is the right size for your cape.

Evelyn is right

The form isn't the problem, it's the size of the cape. When you "stretched it" you are actually shortening the length of your cape. I've seen briskets pulled so high they look like goatee's using this method. Remeasure the cape and order the correct form size.

sorry about that - someone must have switched my "y" and "t" keys. Thanks everyone for the replies. I've remeasured and will order a size smaller.
