I am doing a coon hide. I skinned, fleshed, salted and refleshed the hide. Should I degrease the hide before i pickle and neutralize it ?What will happen if I degreae it after the pickling and neutralize it?

I perfer to degrease in the middle of the pickle. I usually pickle for 3 days, shave, wash, degrease and then back in the pickle for a day or so. Many ways to skin a cat

I also degrease during the pickle process. I have used Epo Grip Bloodout degreaser and was told by Phil Helms that the tannery degreaser sold through McKenzie is a good choice also.

I also degrease once they are shaved and pickled!

The best time to degrease is after they are pickled completely and shaved. If I'm doing 3-6 Boar Capes I wait until they are all done, drain them for 30 minutes, then I degrease them, Wash them, and rinse them well before I place them back in the pickle overnight. The next day or weeks later, I'll neutralize and tan them. This is a safe method - no problems!
