Cape OK?

Submitted by Carl E on 3/27/02. ( mtnhntr@msn.com ) 63.26.74.178

I recently bought a Frozen W/T cape off this forum and when I got it I didn't have time to deal with it so I put it in the freezer for a week, took it out and turned the ears, eyes, etc and cleaned it up as best I could (apeared to have been shot in the neck area and was quite bloody). I rough fleshed and salted. Left on salt for about a week and a half, but I've done that before with no problem. I was in a hurry at the time and didn't re-hydrate. Straight into my tanning solution, which is alum. sulphate/sulpheric acid recipe for four days then neutralize overnite. I've done all this before with great results but this time the flesh side of the cape has brown splotches of various shade on it. my first guess was freezer burn but I don't have any experience with it to know. It shaved real nice and is in good shape otherwise. Anyone out there Know what it is, what caused it, and is it OK to mount? Thanks for any help you can give. Carl

Impact Trauma?

Carl- Are the spots in the area of the bullet hole? If so, it's possible that the spots are blunt trauma bruises. I recently tanned a fox hide and noticed that the bruised area of the hide (near the bullet hole) was brown after tanning. I had the same thing happen to a deer hide. Just a thought. Patrick

mount it up

if the cape is not slipping, and you tanned it in the manner in which you have described, oil it and mount it. Sounds like you have matters well in hand.
