Lutan F Tanning Times

When using the Lutan-F tanning method does it hurt anything to leave the hide or cape in the tanning solution longer than the reccommended time suggested? Also, what is a good paint schedule for deer hooves when making gun rack mounts?
Thanks, Have a great day!

Leave your hide or cape in the solution for only 16 to 20 hours. You need to make sure that you don't over-tan the hideor cape and get the resulting cross-linkage bonding that occurs and takes away the stretch and flexibility of your hide or cape. Why would you need to paint a deer hoof? If anything, wipe on a thin coat of oil or vaseline and buff it.

It depends on the thickness of the hide.

A thin hide will obviously not need to long. A thick hide on the other hand will take longer. The instructions I have with my Lutan-F call for thin skins to soak for 12-15 hrs. A thick hide you will want to soak for 24 to 48 hrs. I was once told years ago that Lutan will not overtan. That is the reason you measure the weight of the skin. Once the Lutan is absorbed into the skin it is gone. I am not a chemist so I cannot prove what was told to me. So I stick with the 12 to 15,24 to 48 hrs.
