Whitetail Repairs

Submitted by Dan on 3/15/02. ( ) 206.152.249.160

I have a whitetail mount that did not turn out to good. I had a big slice across the neck area. I repaired the the hole and thought it looked good. Now the hide is on the manikin and has dried, you can see where the long hairs have have been cut. It looks bad, is there ways to repair it or is it to late?

Tough to replace cut hairs..I assume you or someone cut the throat and my question would be...WHY? Pick up another cape and try, try again

If you tanned the hide you can rehydrate it remove it and try it all over. I hope it's a pratice cape if not let the client know the slice ruined the hide nad get a new one to replace it. Let the client pay for the new one.

tint it!

ONE option to think about is to tint the area with pure white airbrushed paint. this will blend the edges between the white hairs on top and the greyer underlying hair butts. then chew the customer out for cutting the throat! if he cut the throat because he thought he had to to save the meat from spoilage, that is a myth. in the time it takes to cape down the head/neck, the meat wont spoil. if he did the "tarzan thing" and decided to "finish" the deer with his bowie knife, chances are that deer would have died anyway without this extra help. as forest gump says, that all i got to say about that. oh yeah, the wife says put habitat around its neck to hide the damage, if the mount allows.
