whitetail lips

Submitted by LeAnn Pogue on 4/8/02. ( ) 67.203.98.19

I tried very hard to be patient in splitting the lips, but still made a couple of holes that will show on the finished mount. Is there any way to repair these or cover them up? This is my second mount. My first one looks great except for the lips, and was hoping to improve on that this time.

Thanks so much. This forum is a lifesaver.

almost all taxidermy supply carry it use to fill in any holes
you can even improve your last mount. used alot in open mouth work
I prefer apoxie clay it smooths out easily with water before it's
cured. for holes in the hair side of the deer lips sew up using
nylon quilters thread use small stitches from the hair side so
you can be careful not to trap hairs in your stitch work.

Sew 'Em

I recently finished a doe pedestal mount (photos at prilev.home.insightbb.com) and had a few holes in the lower lip area. I obtained some suture thread w/a needle already attached (the kind a doctor would use to sew up a cut) and sewed the holes. I then spread some Zap-A-Gap glue over the holes and covered that with pieces of uses dryer sheet. All this was done on the inside of the hide. Some will say that this is overkill, but it works great. The holes are invisible. Good Luck. Patrick

No need to hunt down suture.

You can use a heavy thread from Wally world or FIRELINE, I prefer the later as it can be pulled very tight. Just work the seam a little before the mount dries.

I always sew the cuts, seems pinning can be seen, maybe the customer dont see it but some day they might. Besides that what the cusomter is paying for!
