1st deer mount

I am going to mount my first deer head and got a ? about the ears. I bought a video from WASCO and it shows how to use earliners with the cartlige left in. I have seen in this forum where this method makes the ears too thick. Is this the only problem with leaving cartlige in or are the ears more likely to drum? When I get a cape to practice on I will try removing the cartlige, but for now I only have one cape and I figured I might mess the ears up if I tried this now. I will be using dry preservative for this mount. Thanks for any ideas. Jason.

You seem very worried about not messing up the ears on this mount, yet you are using dry preservative, which eventually will mess up the whole mount. If you want to do a good mount, why not start right from the start and tan the cape, then worry about the ears. If you want to leave the cartiledge in it why not go with the bondo method. Works great.

thanks

I looked through the archives on the bondo and I think I will give it a try. I also looked at the DP vs. tanning wars, lot of discussion on this, I will read more about it. Thanks for the advise.

.....If I was going to leave the cartilage in I don't think I would need any earliners I would have to find some way of carding them so they don't buckle and allow longer drying time.It is actually possible to skin the cartilage completly out,try using your fingers and pry the cartilage out,Kinda like skinning a bird It is all finger work?...Lloyd
