Fleshing by hand or machine?

Hi folks, I've heard about fleshing machines, but not used one as I'm new to all this. I use an Alaskan Ulu to flesh the few hides I've tanned and it seems to work great (Long as I have my sharpening stone handy!). What is the advantage to a fleshing machine, how does it work, etc?

Advantages are...Saves your back! Basically a spinning disk with 2 blade guards for (depth of cut),. best when thinning hides just out of the pickle bath. If you do a large amount of tanning yourself,.. it is a very good investment.

Bonnie, I have been doing taxidermy for 14 years and just recently purchased a used rotary fleshing machine. I used a beam to flesh my hides prior to purchasing the machine, Let me tell you I should have bought one 13 years ago.

As soon as you can afford one, Buy one it's a time saver.

Good luck, J.L. Mooney

Bonnie, All of the above are true about fleshing machines. There are a few that say its better by hand but I personally won't go back. When you are considering buying one look around and get opinions some are good and some aren't. We recently purchased a new one after 17 years and wished I could have gotten a better one years ago. Good luck, Mark

Thanks!

Thanks to all! As soon as I stop SPENDING money on hides and start MAKING some I may invest in one...that and a fur machine! When I get ready to purchase I'll be sure to ask here!
