So after you salt a hide and it starts to drain.... how does it smell?
Or does it? Do you let it drain outside or down the sink or what?
Seems like the juice would be smelly. As you can tell I've never
salted a hide but I going to soon and I'm trying to figure out the
best place to place the hides for draining.

MW, If the hide doesn't smell before its salted you shouldn't have any at all. Try and drain it in a dry area if possible. If you have a fan blow the hide with it to speed up the drying process. The fluids shouldn't have an odor either. I wouldn't do it in the house but a garage if its cool will work. Good luck,Mark
I use a draining rack with a catch basin and there's usually a mild musky odor, but not offensive. If there's excess blood in the hair, it WILL smell putrid until it dries completely.
Thanks. I have a shed out back that'll work great then.
I hang mine over plastic concrete mixing tub. It's just about the perfect size for my shop (about 2' X 3'). It's light, easy to clean, and it can be used for washing and soaking some of the bigger stuff that won't fit in a bucket. 10 bucks at the hardware store. It's a good thing.

My shop is a little bigger than that :-0
No 1 Rub salt into your hide really good this step is just to preserve hide till you are ready to tan later on eh? No2 take the hide out of storage and drain salted hide down drain get all the salt out then put in tan No3 after tan rinse and wash after you have washed really good you can rinse it really good.No4 then let it drip dry really good maybe till next day sew up all holes arm pits etc. after this you can put your ear liners in and proceed with wmounting.
