skunk odor is oil based, have found that a good degreaser is a good start, also have worked with hyrogen peroxide , baking soda and dish soap, and works to, but watch out is high ph level.
lol and for the dog , he got sprayed on monday night again and lol i just give him about a week and the smell is gone ,

Helping out an old lady

You'll get a kick outta this. 'Bout three weeks ago, this elderly women in our home town encounters, to say the very least, a problem. Her home is built over a crawl space and the duct work for her heating/AC runs beneath the floors in that space. Sometime prior, a skunk crawls into the crawl space via a window casement/ access hole and is under there for who knows how long. Anyway, the skunk eventually finds a section of duct work that has come unattached and fallen to the ground - his way out. He goes up the duct and enters into the woman's bathroom via a cold air return where he is discovered that morning by the woman when she goes to use the facilities. She calls 911 with this amusing predicament and the local constabulary sends an officer and the animal control officer. Keep in mind that this ditzoid they have in Animal Control has repeatedly demonstrated that the mere act of breathing rquires advancement beyond her capabilities. Animal Control Officer lady goes into the situation with a take charge attitude and, in attempting to secure the offending mephitid, engages in hand-to-gland combat. The bathroom is completely contaminated while the ACO somehow gets the door closed and escapes unscathed. After considering several options they resort to shooting the animl from a protected location because, after all, once a skunk has discharged, it is unarmed for several hours. Right? Hmmm.
Police office reopens door a mere crack, aims and fires. Direct hit. Skunk starts flipping and flopping all over the floor spraying blood and (what? musk all over everything. After the dust clears, they now face the problem of removing the skunk from the premises. Several officers try to enter the room and several officers end up on the front line vomiting. In the end, Fire-Rescue is summoned and a firefighter in SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) enters the home and bags/ removes the carcass.
Last I heard, that poor old lady was still in temporary living quarters and the house could be smelled for a block in any direction. I've been meaning to look up this recipe for neutralizing skunk musk and this has reminded me to do that. Taxidermists to the rescue..

lol good story!

that made me laugh lh thanks for sharing, the knuckle heads would have been in much better shape by making a skunk trap that the animal can lift its tail and spray lol ( yes i made one lol dogs got nailed 2 times in 3 weeks )

Febreeze

This response submitted by Aaron L. on 5/2/02. ( aj@charter.net ) 198.140.4.205

I used febreeze. I skinned and fleshed, then soaked in degreaser for about twenty minutes. Then into a bucket of febreeze for an hour. Let the hide air dry and all traces of odor were gone. Of course, by the time I washed him out I smelled like a 250lb skunk. Might be a good idea to carefully cut out gland and then soak before fleshing. Good luck.
