Varnished Antlers

Submitted by Dan Catlin on 4/27/02. ( catlinhome@hotmail.com ) 198.110.161.126

I have a set of Whitetail antlers that were varnished about 15 yrs ago. Should I try to strip this off or just mount them. I'm doing a shoulder mount. Has anyone ever mounted antlers in this condition. If not how do I strip it off without ruining the antlers. Thanks for any responses or suggestions.

Dan, beleive it or not I have sand blasted antlers, skulls, and even turtle shells that people have brought to me to be mounted or re-done. You have to be careful but it can be done. On antlers if you get a little to carried away all you need to do is go up to Wal-Mart and get some Old English Liquid Furniture Poolish and wipe it on to the antlers lightly and wa la, your antlers have their color back. A friend taught me that a few years ago. Works for bleached out antlers too. Good Luck. Hope this helps. Dan

Be careful not to use a "stripper" type product on the antlers or you will regret it!

If I don't have a sand blaster and I shouldn't use stripper how do I get it off or should I just leave it. THANKS!

Methol Ethol Keton (sp.)
A respirator and MEK proof gloves are a must! Archives (search) has tons of help.
