Submitted by hagan on 4/29/02. ( headredirish@hotmail.com ) 65.58.177.165

I have scrubbed down antlers with acetone and wire brush, but will not take an even stain. I am using antler stain also. Can somebody please spare some tips? Thanks

Base coat

I am sure the repros are cast from rigid co-polymer. The material itself will yellow over time and exposure to sunlight. You should base coat it with the proper color in a flat acrylic paint and then use the stain over that. Don't those things come with instructions?

NO they dont come with instructions.

I dress them down and spray flat Krylon Almond, next mix the color you want with Windsor Newton Acrylics, paint and wipe off what you dont want.

Seems the repos will even melt and change shape above 110 degrees in many cases. Most are using POR-A-CAST, the U/V protected stuff will droop and the none U/V protected will yellow, this is why you need to use a flat color for your base coat.

Min Wax

Min Wax stains, in the yellow can, are my choice. Paint on a uniform coat and let dry, usually takes several days. Then take a cloth with laquer thinner or acetone and buff off the stain where you don't want it. If you mess up wash the whole thing off with laquer thinner and start over. As far as the color goes try the darker walnuts. Antler color varies so you may have to try several to get the shade that you want.
