Tumbler - Baffles Vs No Baffles

Submitted by Joe on 5/7/02. ( gwhnk@evenlink.com ) 65.206.79.207

I just built a 55gal tumbler from plans that where in a Breakthrough Magazine that a taxidermist loaned me. I am not sure about putting baffles in it. It will be used mostly for hides (deer, fox, skunk)doing projects with scouts and kids. But I may also do a bird as I am getting into this "taxidermy thing". Would appreciate some view points on the baffle Vs no baffle idea. We were using a old clothes dryer and I have the baffles from that. We also were putting baseballs in to beat the hides up, but this will be much slower-17rpm and from what I read in the archives should do a better job. Tring to make it an all-purpose tumbler. Thank you for any replies that you may give. Joe

In a plastic drum without baffles, the hides will simply keep sliding down the sides without ever tumbling.

I have no baffles. Mine turns about 12.5 rpm and works fine. That is not to say a baffle may help. But it tumbles and dries birds as well as the capes I have done in it.
