FREE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE

Submitted by Gerry on 5/15/02. ( gazwozhere@aol.com ) 195.93.50.9

There seem to be a lot of posts with people complaining they have recieved a virus via their email address posted on this site.
i can thoroughly recommend this FREE antivirus download http://www.grisoft.com

There is nothing to pay, it is a relatively small download, it does a lot, and will automatically update both itself and its virus database to keep up with new virus that may come along. It has been said that it is no different in the level of protection you get from the programmes you pay for for Norton, MaCaffee etc.

Try it out if you dont have any protection or cant justify the cost of the big name products. I have used it for 2 years now and think it is great.

Just trying to help out

or at least a 30 day, fully functioning trialware version. You can download it with all the updates free from http://www.symantec.com/downloads/ This will at least give you some protection against the current email trojan threats. Yes, there is free anti virus software out there but remember that you get what you pay for! I am a network administrator and trust me when I say stick with Norton or Mcafee, it may cost a few $$ up front but lot cheaper than having someone like me come fix your computer. I repair pc's part time and get $50 per hour, 1 hour minimum plus time/milage to come to a customers house. Had a lot of these people just had a reputable AND UPDATED detection installed, they wouldn't have been writing me a check. Remember, no matter what virus software you have, it can only detect what it knows to look for. Make sure you keep your virus definition files up to date!

Virus protection is the problem!

I don't have ANY protection on my PC right now and it's because I had problems with both Norton and Zone Alarm. I had DSL interenet connection and both of these programs messed up my computer so badly I ended up paying the cable tech to come out and remove the software COMPLETELY (as the REMOVE programs doesn't) so that I could have internet access. Well what now? I'm afraid to reload these programs, but it scares me to DEATH not to have any protection. <sigh> I've also use McAfee before and had troubles with that... I give up! LOL At any rate, what I've been doing is using House Call about once a week to scan my puter for viruses...and been LUCKY so far. Any suggestions?

re grisoft and AVG

I agree that you get what you pay for, but I was turned onto this freeware by a network administrator who is responsible for maintaining all the computers for our county courthouse, emergency 911 center, etc., and it's been his personal experience that it does as well or better than any of the big name stuff. In any event, I've stayed virus free throughout this entire few weeks of attacks (knock on wood) and can't complain about successful results.

Try Norton again or Mcafee for that matter. Millions of people are running both these programs and DSL/cable broadband. Sounds like some other software causing the problem. Make sure you have all the current Windows updates for your operating system by using the Windows update feature. After these are downloaded and installed, download the Norton Trialware and give it a shot. It should not cause any difficulties but if you have some internet issues, just go into options and select only the email scan as that is how 98% of viruses are transmitted. If you choose to stay without protection, don't open emails that have attachments and you should be alright.

Just like to say

I'm not in any way knocking the commercial programs out there from Symantec etc, just seemed like a good idea to me to let people know there are viable alternatives to these systems, I dont know if AVG has all the bells and whistles that the big names have, I do know that I have used it for some time now with no problems, it runs continually in the background, and updates by itself when you are online, both its virus database and the program itself. If you have no protection at all then I cant see that it is a bad thing to use this, as many people cant afford the big name products for whatever reason, and what do you do when your 30 days trial is up? you have to buy it to carry on using it, you cannot download another 30 day trial as there will be an entry in your registry preventing you from doing so. I also use Zone Alarm, again, I dont know if its the best out there, but its free, it can seem like a nightmare to use at first as nothing seems to get through, you get alerts every few seconds, but after time it 'learns' what you want to allow through, and with some time spent on the configuration it should work fine. I'm no expert, just relating my own experience of these programs, they work, they are free, so I use them, may not be for everyone, but no protection these days is stupid, after all, you probably wont notice if you are infected with anything, it is the other person who unwittingly gets the email from you that gets the problem, and you end up getting the blame!
