How do you keep the antlers from getting bleached when soaking the skull? and can bleached antlers be fixed? could find nothing about this in archives.

bleached antlers

The best thing is not to get the antlers bleached and that is easily avoided. When you soak the skull in the solution, tilt it so the back of the skull is actually out of the solution. Take a white towel, soak it in the solution and lay it around the antler burrs over the back of the skull. Leave it in there for 24 hrs. and then let it dry in the sun for several days. The skull will be nice white and your antler burrs won't be bleached. If they did get bleached you can put the color back with either antlerstain or (which I prefer) some of the brown paints you use for finish work. Apply the brown on the antler where it is bleached and then with an old toothbrush rub it in and blend it in to the original antlercolor. Should work pretty good. Hope this will help you.

careful with stain, and toothbrush

I use stain to color mine back if needed, but be careful, especially if you use a toothbrush. The toothbrush will splatter specks of stain on your whitened skull. I use stain with a q-tip and turn the skull upside down just in case of a drip. If you get stain on the skull you are in for trouble. Skullery....Jeff....<><
