You can split the tail (I split it from underneath) and open the outside skin. YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO USE A SCALPEL FOR THE WHOLE THING. The skin does not peel away without a grudge. The cartilage cuts relatively easy enough, but cleaning it all out so that it can be tanned is very time consuming and maddening sometimes.

Sure can......

be done. Cut the length of the tail from the UNDERSIDE, skin out, scrape, salt and send to tannery. I carve fron foam for the replacement inside and staple bottom. There are other ways as well. If you cut a whole in the show side of skin use epoxy sculpt and texture. Personally I hate artificial tails unless I make it myself..lol Hope this helps....oh yes don't forget to use his incisors in the mount as well. have fun

Ask Yourself......

......why do they make and sell cast beaver tails? When you complete the project using the reas tail you will easily be able to answer that question.

Yes your first skinning of the tail is not going to be easy; but trust me it isn't all that hard! Old Fart I skin them with very little fat left on and then litterally shave off the rest and it doesn't take long at all. I like the little natural hairs that are on the natural tail. But like george said if you do it this way make sure you charge extra.
