If you are contemplating relocating to an area based on the potential for work in birds there are two approaches you could take.

The first would be to locate in an area where a large amount of bird hunting takes place, a coastal area for ducks, prarie heartland like South Dakota for Pheasant hunting, or damn near anywhere for turkeys. Hanging a shingle out, or otherwise promoting yourself to the transient hunters in these areas one could make a reasonable living doing only birds - but, because birds are easy to transport frozen, many of the hunters may transport the birds back to their hometown for mounting. Unfortunately many times the rural populations don't generate sufficent specimens to mount to make a good living. Then you could cultivate a mail order customer business or go wholesale.

The other approach would be to move to a larger population center that has a hunting history and wealth componant. As an illustration for example Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming put together has a smaller population than the greater Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. While the respective populations of 3 million in each case, the Western three state population would have many more hunters with which to base a business on, the likelihood of a hunter driving from Laramie to Pocatello to get a duck mounted is much less than Valley Forge to Philadelphia. Also, the amount of people who travel to exotic areas to hunt birds (Africa, South America, etc.) may be larger in a wealthier area and could be cultivated with Ducks Unlimited Organizations easier in an Urban area. One Newspaper add in a Sunday edition in one paper would canvas the whole area in the Philadelphia example. Besides, those rural wealthy big game hunters have their own professional taxidermists who they bring along for bird safari. You could attempt to go this route but you would need a good reputation. The background of the area I refer to is an aspect of if the area supports many hunters or they concentrate on tree huggers. I wouldn't think San Francisco would be very taxidermist friendly but then I've not been there.

Your earlier posting simply asked where most birds were mounted and CMr. Gaither gave you his opinion. Even here, I read into your question to attempt to figure out what it was you were asking. As stated directly "Where in North America are the taxidermists doing the most bird work." I can state with certainty that most bird work is performed in Taxidermy shops. It helps to know what you are asking a question for.
