I can't imagine any reason to RE-tan a hide. Unless it's a case of something I'm unfamiliar with, the second time around won't make it any better.

That is home tanned deer hide, I found the hide very stiff, so, I would like re-tanne it and put back a good tanning oil, ( last time I use neats-foot oil, probably not a sulfonated.)Any help appreciated.

If it was tanned properly, it still doesn't need to be retanned. It NEEDS to be BROKEN. Check the archives on breaking a hide. Your best best on this one is to rehydrate the skin in warm water for a few hours, let it drip dry, and then roll it up and put it into a plastic bag and refrigerate. The next day, take the hide out and stretch it. Rub the hide with a quality tanning oil. Keep reoiling the hide until it puddles. Once it puddles, wipe off the excess and break the hide. Once broken, you leather will stay soft and supple, but it WILL dry out. You should reoil it at least one time after breaking it to insure the oil is saturated into the hide. Rug as usual.

I would like to know how to care for the hide of a deer. we put salt on it and its out drying now what am I to do. thanks
