I started doing the finish work on a whitetail and as I was cleaning around the eye I found that I scratched the eye. Is there a way to fix this? It"s not a little scratch it"s right in the middle of the eye and about 1/16 by 1/16 in size. I must of hit it with the chuck of the dremel while working around the eye. Help please.

Try covering the eye with gloss. It may take a coat or two.
around a finished mount anyway? No suggestion except rehydrate and replace it, but it will more than likley never look the same. But now that I think about it I am sure it did not look good anyway. Don't give up your day job!
the video i have says to use a little matte varnish on it.good luck Lloyd
Just clear coat it and you wont be able to tell the difference.
I only do this part time. My full time job is my TV repair shop. Whats this got to do with it you say? More than once I have had sets come in with scratches on the Picture tube - my cure, a winshield scratch repair kit! Never tried it on a eye but the scratches on the pix tube were a lot worse off than you described. If you do try it, I'd be curious to see how it worked for you. My 3 cents worth.
How do you know it did'nt look good.
That's like saying, "everyone says Gary's work sucks". Everyone has'nt seen it, but it probably does.
Thanks for the suggestions this should help out a lot. Vic any idea how much windshield scratch repair kit would cost? When I wet the eye with a q-tip the scratches go away for the most part, so I think the clear coat will work also.
As for you Gary, I did the scratches preparing the manikin before I put the hide on. I have been told by many people that my deer mounts look better than the guy who has been doing it for over 20 yrs. Why you might ask, because I care about my mounts and the people I do them for. I made a mistake and I"m trying to correct it for the customer and myself. I do this part time anyway. I hope you don"t treat your customers in the same manner or you just might want to look for a new job. My day job pays to good to quit anyway!

I would apply gloss only to the scratch Ihave done this and it hides the scratch nicley.
Jim, checked with the local NAPA a few minutes ago and the current cost is $9.44 plus tax here. Check around with your local auto parts stores and they will tell you if they carry them and the price. This has my curiosity up whether it works but I have no intention of scratching a eye to test it!
I had a scratch on a deer eye one time and used the dremel tool with the rubber disk to polish it out. It woprked great.
Put a little jewelers rouge on the disk and lightly use the dremel and it might remove the scratch. I would caution, though, not to out a lot of pressure on the eye or to leave the disk on the glass for very long at one time to avoid a heat build up.
Good luck.

I"m going to gloss this eye but I think I"m going to buy a set and test some of the other methods out on them just to see what the results are. That way I know what can and cannot be done in the future. Thanks again for all the suggestions. I"ll let you know how it turns out on the mount and when I do my test.
