When taxidermists were true artisans, they had to build their own mannikins and armatures out of wood, excelsior, cord, plaster and boiled bones, the trick to getting things stuck in the right place became a little tricky. Therefore, they sewed the lips of animals along the lip lines and when put on the armature, a simple nail indexed it for perpetuity. A NEW invention came along that modernized that: paper forms. Sometimes a lip slot could be cut, but when a wet hide was placed on the form, the paper got soggy and your closed mouth mount now suddenly ended being open. Again, the stitches were used. Since most of you don't have a clue about paper forms,it's not surprising to hear you never heard of sewing them for the old armatures we used. There's one more reason you can thank your lucky stars for foam forms and how the industry has changed.

I don't know about the current test, but the qualification tests for Pennsylvania taxidermists not too long ago required that fish skins be sewn on the mannikins. I'm just thankful for power staplers and good epoxy glue that ended that crap as well.
