Click on the search icon and type in "pricing". After reading for about two days or so I would encourage you to make your own decision. Whew that one was close!

Plenty of formulas for figuring cost/overhead/profit. Take the good advice and make it worth your while, so it STAYS fun. Those who dissagree with us say they are just enjoying it, and that as full timers, we dont enjoy it. Too bad they dont know what WE do...

No Wonder I love you, Yox

Check your state laws

This response submitted by Len on 6/7/02. ( lengums@powercom.net ) 216.114.21.105

Hi jim, In some states you are required to have a taxidermy license in order to do taxidermy for a consideration. This includes just paying for the costs of the materials while doing it for friends. The DNR's don't consider it a hobby if you are required to have a license. Know your laws to stay out of trouble.
Listen to Bill. Even while you are learning, do not be afraid to charge a fair price as you will be spending money to buy tools, materials, hopefully reference material, and maybe videos's to learn from. Do not forget to charge for your time as it will be time consuming while your are learning. Good luck.

Listen to the advice givin

I know, you wanted a figure amount, ok, $350.00 to $650.00 is the numbers that bounce around here. Pick one on either end, or anyone in between, and charge your friend. If he says no, that is fine, he is still your friend, and tell him, after all, don't you want me to be successful. If you start doing friends, realitives, or maybe even strangers mounts for cheap or free. You will get plenty of work, or should I say plenty of work for your freezer. Because once you realize your worth, and someone brings you a deer head and you charge from the figures I gave you above. Guess who's deer head is getting mounted, and guess who's is being worked on by the freezer. Then if you are fortunate and were bless with the talent and ablility, you will get more work that pays. Guess who's deer head is getting worked on in the freezer. But soon these people who wanted you to do their deer cheap or for free are calling you, and bugging you, and now instead of the freezer working on their deer, which by the way, is cheap labor, they want you to get it done, and you are not really their favorite person anymore.
The example of Roofer was already used, I will use Realtor, to be a realtor you do need to attend some training, which is not really required in some states for taxidermy. But when you are done taking the training and past your test, you can then start selling homes. Now the first few homes you sell, you don't give them away, untill you think you have the feel for it. Get the idea. rw

jim, E-mail me if you want the taxidermy laws in Wisconsin. If you want cheap and easy reference pictures, just look in the hunting magazines as they have some really good photo's in them.

Ever hear of the phrase "when hell freezes over?"...well, when we never have to suggest the archives (by the way, I dont mind doing so for the sake of the beginners) THEN my hair might grow back!
